Wash your face like it’s your religion: Taking your makeup off and moisturizing every single day before you go to bed is the single most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy complexion. Your skin regenerates itself at night, if your skin is clean it can more easily heal itself. You will also avoid breakouts by making sure any SPF, dirt, oil, pollutants are off your skin before you to go bed.
Consistency is king: Don’t be a perfectionist, just make your skincare routine a daily habit. Focus on consistency over having the most advanced products. You will get better results with mediocre products that you use every day versus using more advanced products that you only use once a week.
Aim to apply SPF every two hours: Sunscreen quite literally freezes your skin in time. Photoaging is the number one cause of premature aging. Applying a minimum of SPF 30 every morning under makeup is mandatory, but you must also find a method of reapplication that works for you. Spray SPF and powder SPF are more sustainable methods to reapply throughout the day. It doesn’t matter if you’re inside all day and it’s cloudy outside, wear sunscreen.
Treat hormonal acne as sensitive skin, NOT oily skin: There’s a large misconception that I see amongst adult women. If you’re having breakouts as an adult, these breakouts are most likely hormonal. Hormonal acne cannot be cleared up by using traditional acne clearing methods that eradicate oil because it is not caused by oil. Hormonal acne is caused by an imbalance of your hormones. Therefore, you should seek to balance hormones and treat your skin like sensitive skin. Using harsh products on your skin such as tea tree, salicylic acid, and witch hazel, is going to exasperate your acne by disrupting your skin barrier.
Protect the skin barrier at all costs: The skin barrier, also known as the acid mantle, is what regulates the ecosystem on the surface of the skin. Maintaining the healthiest ecosystem is the way to maintain the most healthy, youthful, acne-free skin. Disrupting the skin barrier will cause acne and aging. In order to protect the barrier, less is more. Keep a simple daily routine appropriate for your skin type. Use chemical exfoliation moderately and make sure not to overdo it.
Clean skin is happy skin: Seek out professional facials with extractions every 4-12 weeks. Think of facials as getting your teeth professionally cleaned. Going to the dentist prolongs the longevity of your teeth, prevents gingivitis, prevents gums from receding, etc. The same with your skin. When your skin is clean it can regenerate itself more easily and its beauty will last longer.
Liquid exfoliation > mechanical exfoliation: Exfoliation is necessary to any anti-aging routine. That’s because cell turnover decreases as we age, and exfoliation increases cell turnover. But not all exfoliation is the same. Liquid exfoliation is the use of chemicals that will safely melt away dead skin cells, while mechanical exfoliation uses beads, salt, sugar, other abrasives to physically slough away dead skin cells. When used correctly chemical exfoliation is safer and more effective. I recommend chemical exfoliation three times a week or so and mechanical exfoliation rarely or however you see fit for your skin type.
Youthful skin is a holistic endeavor: The look and health of your skin is directly affected by the overall health of your body. Poor nutrition, hydration, quality of sleep, and stress management will accelerate aging. Conversely, taking care of your mental, physical, and spiritual health will prolong the aging process.
